Our Veterinarians

Dr. Brainard of Brewer Veterinary Clinic
Dr. Caryn Brainard

Dr. Brainard grew up in Massachusetts and knew from a young age that she wanted to become a veterinarian. Her passion for animals started early, having always shared her life with pets and spending much of her time caring for and learning from animals. She began her veterinary career working as a veterinary assistant and technician, gaining hands-on experience and a strong foundation in patient care. She also spent time training horses and teaching horseback riding lessons, further deepening her understanding of animal behavior and the human-animal bond.

Dr. Brainard attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she earned her undergraduate degree in pre-veterinary medicine. She then continued her education at Colorado State University, earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2008. While in veterinary school, she pursued a large animal track, but her career has focused on small animal medicine, where she enjoys building long-term relationships with pets and their families.

Her professional interests include dentistry, preventive care, and pain management. She also has a special interest in helping fearful and challenging dogs. Dr. Brainard believes that veterinary visits can be made less stressful by understanding each pet’s individual needs and working with owners to create practical strategies that help their pets feel more comfortable and confident.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Brainard enjoys life on her small farm, where she cares for goats, horses, chickens, dogs, cats, and a turtle. She enjoys spending time with her daughter and, in her free time, loves gardening, camping, hiking, and taking on projects around her home. She feels fortunate to combine her love of animals, medicine, and lifelong learning every day through veterinary care.

Dr. Pryor of Brewer Veterinary Clinic
Dr. Wilhelmina Pryor

Dr. Pryor has been a huge part of the Brewer Veterinary Clinic team for several years. Before moving to Maine from Georgia, she graduated from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Pryor knew from the very young age of 7 or 8 that she wanted to pursue a career in veterinary medicine and worked hard in school and beyond to fulfill that dream.

Dr. Pryor’s interest in veterinary medicine is caring for geriatric cats. While Dr. Pryor is well-known for her fondness for cats, she also shares that fondness for pigeons. When she’s not caring for animals at the Brewer Vet, she enjoys her time at home with her cats, dogs, and birds. She also enjoys reading and attending concerts.

Dr. Jaycob Bowker

Dr. Bowker began practicing at Brewer Vet in the summer of 2023, but has been a familiar face at the clinic long before that. Born and raised right here in Brewer, he shadowed at BVC in high school, then worked as a veterinary assistant while studying as an undergrad at the University of Maine. Dr. Bowker completed his studies at the University of Prince Edward Island.

Dr. Bowker’s love of problem-solving, science, and animals made his decision to pursue veterinary medicine in high school an easy one. Internal medicine and ultrasound are two areas in the profession that he is particularly fond of.

In his spare time, Dr. Bowker enjoys the many activities that his home state has to offer, such as camping, fishing, hiking, and kayaking/canoeing. He also enjoys the occasional video game or two. Dr. Bowker also loves spending time with his family’s four dogs – three Labradors and one Border Collie.

Dr. Wolland of Brewer Veterinary Clinic
Dr. Michael Wolland

Dr. Michael Wolland has been with BVC since spring 2023, but has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 55 years. He completed his undergraduate studies at Dartmouth College and graduated from the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1968. He has an interest in preventive medicine as well as endocrinology.

Dr. Wolland knew he wanted to be a veterinarian from the age of 10. His love of animals as a child was not limited to just dogs and cats, but loved monkeys and rabbits as well. Dr. Wolland grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, but has lived in New York, “The County” in northern Maine, and Maryland

Dr. Wolland has a fabulous sense of humor and a sharp wit. When asked if he has any fun facts about his life he’d like others to know, he replied: “I was alive before Pearl Harbor and went to the movie theater as a kid and paid 25 cents total for the movie, a popcorn, and a drink!”

When Dr. Wolland is not working part-time at Brewer Vet Clinic, he enjoys playing bridge and ballroom dancing. He first visited Brewer Vet as a client with his French bulldog and ended up staying half the day to shadow our staff. He loved it here so much that he decided to join our staff. Dr. Wolland now resides in Bangor.

Our team lives and works in this community — many of us are pet owners ourselves, and we understand firsthand what it means to trust someone else with the care of an animal you love. That understanding shapes everything we do, from the way we explain a diagnosis to the way we handle a nervous patient in the exam room.

Brewer Veterinary Clinic has been a trusted veterinary resource for pet owners in Brewer, ME and throughout the greater Bangor area for over four decades. The longevity of our practice is a reflection of the relationships our team has built — with patients, with clients, and with a community that has welcomed us as a cornerstone of local pet care.
